10,000+ Complimentary Books and a Mission to Preserve Kuchipudi History

The preservation of Indian classical arts increasingly depends on more than performances on stage. While dancers and gurus keep traditions alive through practice and teaching, books, journals and other forms of documentation play an equally important role in ensuring that artistic knowledge remains accessible to future generations. In the field of Kuchipudi, cultural organiser and artiste Vikram Kumar B R, popularly known as Bathina Vikram Goud, has pursued this approach through a major biographical publishing initiative dedicated to one of the dance form’s most influential personalities, Padma Bhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam.

As part of the initiative, Vikram Kumar B R authored and helped distribute more than 10,000 complimentary copies of biographical publications connected with the celebrated Kuchipudi guru. The books include “The Reformer”, written in English, and “Kuchipudi Vythalikudu”, published in Telugu.

The decision to distribute the books without charge reflects an emphasis on cultural accessibility. Rather than treating biographical material only as commercial publications, the initiative sought to place information about an important Kuchipudi personality into the hands of students, practitioners, cultural enthusiasts and institutions.

Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam occupies an important place in the modern history of Kuchipudi. His contribution as a guru and choreographer helped strengthen the visibility and practice of the dance form. Recording his life and artistic contribution therefore also contributes to documenting a significant period in Kuchipudi’s development.

For Vikram Kumar B R, this type of publication forms part of a wider philosophy of cultural preservation. His work has extended across several areas, including Kuchipudi performance, choreography, academic research, theatre, festival organisation, cultural journalism and institution building.

His academic background has also influenced his approach to documentation. After completing a Master’s degree in Kuchipudi with distinction from Andhra University, he undertook detailed research into Siva Thandavam and Saptha Thandavam within the Kuchipudi tradition. This research orientation reflects an interest in understanding classical dance not simply as a performing technique but as a body of knowledge containing history, literature, philosophy, repertoire and artistic interpretation.

The publication of biographies complements this approach. A biography can preserve details that may not be visible in a performance. It can record an artist’s journey, influences, achievements, teaching methods and contribution to the development of an art form.

This becomes particularly important for classical traditions that have historically depended on oral transmission. Knowledge passed from guru to disciple remains central to Indian classical arts, but written records can provide an additional layer of continuity.

The distribution of more than 10,000 complimentary copies also increases the possibility that the material will reach readers beyond the immediate professional dance community. Students can use such books to understand the history of their discipline, while teachers and researchers can refer to biographical information when studying the evolution of Kuchipudi.

The initiative is also consistent with Vikram Kumar B R’s work through The Dance India, an English-language cultural publication focused on Indian dance and related traditions. Through publishing, he has sought to create records of artists, performances, historical developments and cultural practices.

His broader preservation philosophy stresses that an art form cannot be protected merely by preserving its movements. The people who shaped those movements, the gurus who transmitted them, the literature associated with them and the historical circumstances surrounding their development are also part of the heritage.

From this perspective, the 10,000-plus book distribution represents more than a publishing achievement. It is an effort to place cultural memory into a form that can be stored, shared and studied.

The project also highlights the relationship between cultural journalism, biography and education. When important artists are documented while their contributions remain within public memory, future generations have a stronger foundation for understanding the history of their discipline.

For a classical dance tradition such as Kuchipudi, preserving the stories of major gurus is particularly significant. Each generation inherits not only techniques and compositions but also a legacy shaped by earlier practitioners.

Vikram Kumar B R’s biographical initiative dedicated to Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam demonstrates his belief that cultural preservation must include both practice and documentation. Performances keep an art form visible, while books help ensure that its history remains available for those who come after.

By making more than 10,000 copies available as complimentary publications, the initiative has sought to widen access to the story of a major Kuchipudi personality and strengthen the written record of India’s classical dance heritage.

The underlying objective is straightforward but significant: if the achievements of great gurus are documented, published and made accessible, their knowledge and influence have a greater chance of continuing to inspire generations of artists.
